The dispute over the Dokdo/Takeshima islets remains a significant point of contention in the strained South Korea–Japan relationship. The issue most recently came to a head during the Tokyo 2024 Olympics. WebDokdo is a volcanic island rooted in the sea-bottom 2000 meter’s base and established between about 4.6 million years ago and about 2.5 million years ago. Dokdo seems to have been formed about 2 million years before Ulleungdo which was established around 2.5 million years ago.
